No-way it's NORWAY!

Well, most of you know that TWO WHEEL VIEW called me in May with a last minute request for me to co-lead the Norway 2010 trip. Of course I said yes - luckily my work is flexible and I have been able to makeup hours. So here are some pictures of the trip. It was myself, two trip leaders, one from US and one from Canada. We had 6 boys and 4 girls, 6 from Canada and 4 from the US. Touring the city of Tromso with Jens Ole our host and guide. The American group got to do this the first day while the Canadians were still en route. They had a problem with their flights in Canada so they arrived 24 hours later.
We met the Deputy Mayor of Tromso inside the City Hall. We learned about how environmentally conscious the city is, and that politics in Norway are very equal. It is required that there is at least 40% of one gender. In Tromso it is about 50-50 male and female in office.
This was a yummy reindeer stew meal made for us the first day we were out on the bikes. We biked to Ramsfjord camp where we stayed in cabins and learned about the Sami people while enjoying dinner and a nice fire in a Lavvu (a traditional Sami tent which looks like a TeePee).
Here is a Lavvu frame near our cabins. We also enjoyed a traditional Sauna while we were here.
The reflection of the midnight sun - this picture was taken around midnight.
Biking was beautiful when the sun was out, more challenging when it was raining and there was a headwind, but we faired pretty well.
There were multiple ferry crossings most biking days, here you can see how clear the fjord is - incredible scenery in the Arctic Circle!
This camp I affectionately call "Mosquito Camp". While it was arguably one of the most beautiful campsites I have ever stayed at, it was so buggy, most of us just wanted to get inside our tents! But we were able to see the midnight sun well here. The moss was super thick and soft to sleep on. Great night sleep with a blindfold over my eyes.
I took this picture on our rest day in Storslett. We enjoyed a wonderful cabin and hung around and dried out from the wet ride into town.
Our cabin had grass on the roof which is a typical style of many of the homes in Norway.
We also enjoyed some hotdogs at a fire in another Lavvu. Our host Marit joined us with her two sons.
We had fun telling stories and it was here that the Canadians taught me the geography of Canada. We also tried special Norwegian candy, it looks like it is gummy candy covered in sugar, but when you taste it, it is actually covered in a thick layer of salt! Not very often you see so many people spitting out candy...
Here was a great lunch spot with a scenic view.

We went canoeing in the fjord outside of Storsteinnes on our second day off. A friend named Roy set this up for us, unfortunately the weather got really bad and we were fighting the wind rain and cold so it was a quick ride.
Here is the moss up close.
This picture was taken in Sommeroy which is a resort town that we drove to in order to go to a festival. We also took a short hike up to this point and looked at the view of the Atlantic Ocean. It was magical.

Here is the group - Canadians, Americans, and a few Norwegians in there too

Overall it was a fantastic trip. There were some challenges as usual, but Two Wheel View continues to be a great organization to work for. I value the opportunity to share such experiences with young people from all over.

Now that I am back, it is wedding planning and school prep. School starts for me August 21st. Tito has been going to school and working all summer, so nothing new there. But he is gearing up for a freshman orientation program in August at ODU. That's the news from here!

Hope all is well - if in fact anyone is still reading this!

I know it has been a while

The truth is school and work are busy when you are trying to get a leg up in this world. Things are great. Wedding planning is going well. We went to New Mexico to see some friends. I went to Costa Rica for work and had the camera stolen or lost again. Cassie is at home in CT for wedding shower. Bachelor party in NO was awesome. I am off to Denver next week to see friends and for AORE. Cassie is off to work with Two Wheel View in Norway. She is lucky! I am starting a 2nd job to help pay bills. School is expensive. How will we ever pay for our kids to go to school?? I better start saving now.....oh yeah can't because I have to my for our own schooling first. Well I am off like a prom dress. Enjoy the solo shot pic from Costa Rica.

BLOGGS100307173427.jpgTake a look at Tony in Ireland at the Guinness Factory! He sent this pic in an email to me today. The two people he is with are Aiden and Joanne who are a couple that we met on our travels in South America. They were ending a 7 month trip and we were beginning ours and we stayed at the same hostel together in Brazil. I can't wait to hear all the stories Tony has to tell about his whirlwind trip to Europe.

For those of you who don't know, Tony has been taking a Comparative Higher Education class at ODU where they have been researching and comparing U.S. higher ed to Eurpean higher ed. So the culmination of the class was this 10 day trip to Edinborough, Scotland; Dublin, Ireland; and Lond, England. And of course every free minute they have that they are not in class, he is seeing as much of the city and country as possible.

Stay tuned for his stories.... he arrives home March 13th.... happy spring break to everyone!

Our New Friends!

So as some of you know, we are registered on Couch Surfing.com and we have now twice given people a place to stay for a night or two. Both have been great experiences meeting new and interesting people. This past Thursday night we hosted Holly and Richie from England. They quit their jobs and are spending 1 year traveling around the world. (sounds familiar right?) They have rented a car and are driving all sorts of places in the U.S. We had so much fun with them, we spent hours eating, talking, and exchanging travel stories! We look forward to keeping up with their blog and eventually being couch surfers on their couch in England!
Safe Travels Holly and Richie!

Welcome 2010!

So we had a fantastic two week visiting friends and family! Thanks for all the hospitality and love. For those of you we missed on this trip, you were in our thoughts for sure. Here are some pictures from the travels...

We spend the week before Christmas in Columbus OH and there were a few things that I wished I had my camera to take pictures of. The first was when we went to see Garrett (Tony's nephew) play his tuba at Tuba Merry Christmas. It was awesome! It was a free holiday concert where all tuba players from the community were invited to come and play together - it has been going on for years. It started in NYC and now these events are done all over the world. If you ever have a chance to go to it I highly recommend it!

And we went sledding with Cheyanne (Tony's niece) it was a total blast and the hill wasn't even very big - we made up for it with creativity going backwards, forwards, running start, standing, piled on top of each other - you name it we tried it - so much fun!

We also spent some quality time with Ronna and Roger down in Creola during the week. Lots of wonderful family time, good food, lots of popcorn, and Cheyanne and I made 3 apple pies together.

Christmas at Mom and Dad Stafford's House! We opened presents Christmas eve with Tony's brother Tim and his family, Karren, Garrett, and Cheyanne...
Christmas Day we went to Karren's Parents house and we all nearly had heart attacks when we excitedly peered into the big box that Tim got as a Christmas gift - it was the deer he had hunted earlier in the year...
Then we played Rock Band on the Wii, Tony and Tim are having a hard time keeping the rhythm, but we all had fun :)
The next day we headed down to Creola where Mom Stafford is from. The day was crisp, clear, and bright so I took advantage of it by taking some pictures of the old neighborhood...
Mom Stafford in the middle with Aunt Ronna and Uncle Richard
Then we all headed down to the fairgrounds for food, and presents for the kids. The adults participated in a Yankee Swap/White Elephant - Tony was the MC and we had a great time!
Bill and Sue both picked the same exact gift so they ended up with two brownie baking pans!
Then we hopped in the car and drove 12 hours to CT where we celebrated Christmas with the Bensons...
Susie was excited for her present...
That day we celebrated Christmas with the CT clan all my mom's brothers and sisters, their kids and grandkids - we had a total of 40 people at our house... so many people!
We played a mean game of Yankee Swap - I won a fancy toothbrush!
We headed into NYC to meet up with a few friends. We got to meet Baby Hazel! She was born on September 25th and she is precious! Her beautiful Momma, Jaime is the one on the left and Sarah is on the right. Sarah and her boyfriend got engaged! So excited for her, too!
Then we met Carrie, Brian, and Danielle for dinner at a great Vegetarian restaurant. We found out that Brian and Danielle are getting married the same day as we are this year. It was great to see them!
We stayed overnight at Karen & Paulo's house and had a fantastic homemade breakfast in the morning. We enjoyed great conversation about Outward Bound schools and Bambu bicicyles and Karen got introduced to Turkey Bacon and now she loves it! I love how you are branching out and trying lots of kinds of food now! It only took about 28 years and a guy name Paulo!
Then we got to see Meg, Pete and Ellie! So much fun seeing their home and having Ellie show us her toys. Her favorite gift I think was the candy cane attached to the outside of the package!
New Years Eve I got to spend with my beautiful Caitlyn! Nice Hair little buddy...
She loved her wooden hippopotamus until it smacked her in the face and made her lip bleed...oops... Just trying to help her learn some life lessons I guess :)
We also got to meet Piper, Lauren Kamerzel's new baby girl - Caitlyn loved her, it was hilarious, she would go over to Piper stare at her and scream, they were too cute together...
Mike, Jen & Caitlyn enjoying the evening as we got closer to Midnight.
Here we are at Midnight - Happy 2010!
New Years Day we drove up to Cape Cod to spend a couple of night at my parent's new cottage. It is so cute! Erik and Susie came in from Boston and we had a great time hanging out together.
The whole family was together! Including Lola the dog :)
We enjoyed a yummy breakfast of fresh farm egg sandwiches. Meg, Pete & Ellie had given us 2 dozen eggs and a bunch of fresh meat for Christmas and we feasted all weekend!
We all participated in housing projects - getting ready for the house to be rented out this summer. We got a lot done!
Then we had to leave :( and head back to our home in Virginia. On the way we stopped in Maryland at my Cousin PJ's house we hung out with Aunt Pat, Uncle Pete, PJ and his wife Jen and their kids Asher and the newest little one Piper! How adorable they all were!
We are excited and geared up to start 2010. Already we have a lot going on this year. For starters we get married this year! Also, Tony is going to be traveling to Europe for a school class, and then to Costa Rica for his work. Then both of us are scheduled to be trip leaders again to Argentina with TWO WHEEL VIEW in June. The adventures just keep coming!

We hope you all were able to enjoy the holidays... Happy New Year!

Love Cassie & Tony
